Audi est une marque créée en 1910 par August Horch. Ce-dernier avait été évincé du constructeur automobile portant son nom, Horch. Il répliqua alors en donnant naissance à Audi, nom similaire à son patronyme en latin et signifiant écoute.
Audi s’impose dès ses débuts comme une marque plutôt haut de gamme sans verser dans le luxe. On dirait premium aujourd’hui. Elle se caractérise par ses innovations techniques en proposant un modèle à traction avant dès 1933.
Audi intègre le groupe Auto Union en 1932 avec les marques DKW, Horch et Wanderer. Ces quatre constructeurs sont symbolisés par les quatre anneaux entrelacés du logo Auto Union.
