Le motoriste d’avions et fabricant de motos, BMW, fondé en 1916, ne vient à l’automobile qu’en 1928 à la suite du rachat du constructeur Dixi.

Au cours des annees 1950, BMW rachète les petits constructeurs Veritas, en 1953, et AFM, en 1954. À la fin des années 1950, BMW traverse une passe difficile. Un rachat par Mercedes-Benz est alors envisagé.

BMW reprend le groupe Rover en 1994. Il le revend en 2000 en cédant Rover et MG à la société Phoenix, et Land Rover à Ford. BMW conserve toutefois la marque Mini. La marque de prestige Rolls Royce est intégrée en 2003.
